The work day is over. You trudge through miles of traffic and see it on billboards along the highway. You turn the radio on and it’s unavoidable. At last, you arrive home and have a quick dinner. You sit to watch your favorite evening program and there it is. You can’t get away from it. You need it. It needs you. You’ve even called the “800” number from time to time and you’ve sampled the product, always with zero success. Piles of machines and benches and video tapes clutter your basement or attic like so many forgotten Christmas gifts. Thousands of dollars worth of broken promises sit and collect dust as you continue to search for the next breakthrough.

Heavy metal is blasting through the stereo behind the front desk. The air is thick with desire, determination, and drive. You can smell the sweat and blood in harmony with the pleasantly pungent odor of camphor and capsaicin liniments. Beasts of men move through a cloud of chalk dust. Egos are reserved for those very few who have earned the right to brag, though they rarely do. Everyone is here for a purpose. Everyone has the same goal. Get stronger. Put more weight on the bar. Do whatever it takes to add five more pounds to that knurled steel bar. Forget what you know about strength. This is where strength breeds.

I first walked into Southside Gym 2 weeks after my 27th birthday. I had been personally invited by Vinny, a world champion bench presser who has lifted 800 lbs in competition. How could I refuse? I swallowed my ego, laced up my Converse Chuck Taylor high-tops and made the trip after work on a Friday night. Admittedly, I was nervous the first night. I have built a reputation as being a “hardcore” lifter..

246Nobody is completely satisfied with his or her appearance. We all want to change something. For many of us, that means losing weight and getting in shape. But what happens when you weigh so much that it just seems hopeless? If you weigh 200 lbs, maybe you want to lose 10 or 20, and it seems difficult. If you weigh 300 lbs, maybe you feel like you have a chance.

But what if you weighed close to 500 lbs? What if you had been overweight your whole life? What if you just accepted the fact that you would always be obese and unhealthy? What if you accepted the fact that you would die at a young age? What if you finally decided it was enough and you wanted to have a normal life? How would you start? What would you do?

reggieYou want to lose weight? You want to look good? Have no clue where to start? I can help you. Want to pack on slabs of muscle and leave that puny wimp behind? I can help you. Happy with your weight and just want to get healthier? Yeah, I can help. I’ve been where you are. I was once fat and unhappy. I had tits that would make your girlfriend jealous. And all I did about it was drop 30 lbs of fat. Then I was too skinny so I decided to pack on 50 lbs of muscle. Did this happen in a few months? Hell no. This took me about 4 years, and one of the most surprising things I learned was this: losing weight is extremely easy when compared to gaining lean muscle mass.

So, can I help you? Absolutely. Is it easy? Yes and no. The concepts are simple, but committing to them can be difficult. You will run into plateaus and you will get frustrated. There will be times when you won’t lose a single pound for a month, and times when you’ll feel as though you’re going in reverse. Stick with it. This is only as hard as you make it.

If you’re like most people, everything you’ve ever learned about getting in shape has come from friends, co-workers, or maybe the local gym rat. A lucky few learned to stay in shape from high school coaches or gym teachers. Unfortunately for you, most of the information that has been passed around through these circles is faulty and often, just plain wrong.

The following are just a few of the most popular myths regarding health and fitness. Buckle your ab-belt; some of these may surprise the hell out of you.

1. Low reps for weight-gain, high reps for “tone”

First, I hate the word tone. Nobody understands the word. Muscle tone has nothing to do with the way your muscles look in the mirror. A better word would be muscle “definition” and the only real factor driving definition is body fat. Low body fat = defined muscles.

“I can’t lose weight”. “I want to be in shape”. “No matter how much I exercise, I just can’t get stronger!” These are all very common complaints and I hear them almost every day. There are a million different diet plans and exercise routines and cardio kickboxing classes for you to try, and every single one of them can work for you. And every single one of them can lead you to complete failure.

The truth is - any fitness program can work if you, as an individual, really make an effort to make it work! In 99% of cases, the success or failure of a fitness plan is entirely dependent upon the individual. The biggest problem with a fitness plan is that, in general, it gives you a map of what to do but rarely does it give you a way to navigate that map. I could easily sit here and write out a hundred workout routines and diet plans; but without the right guidance, you’ll most likely be left overwhelmed and stressed out. So with your resolve in one hand and your new fitness plan in the other, allow me to offer these tips as a guide to help you succeed.
