It's Always Jane
Page 2

Jane is the woman you are meant to be with. If your life were a film, the audience would see this. You would run around with models and coke whores and lesbians through the first half of the film, but everyone in the theater would see that you were meant for Jane and vice versa. Everyone sees this, except you. But that doesn't mean that in your ignorance you aren't quietly falling in love with her- you are.

You unwittingly fall in love with her precisely because she's not an object, a conquest, a constant struggle from afar. She's right there next to you, having lunch with you, playing cards with you, listening to your idiot problems. In sum, she's getting closer to you, and you're getting closer to her, all while you chase some pipe dream in heels.

There are no contrived games between you and Jane. You don't have to put on a fake face and pay off the doorman to meet her. When you talk to Jane, you show her the real you, for what it's worth, not some fabricated, GQ'esque conception of yourself. And if she didn't like the real you, she wouldn't be having lunch with you, or listening to your problems, or even talking to you. Of course you are always too stupid and blind to see that. But you don't want Jane- not initially. You want the chase.

Indeed, the chase is thrilling. And all men spend some time chasing. But in the end, when the chase fails and you see it for the shallowness it always was- Jane is still there for you. She's there because you two are meant for each other. If she isn't there, well she's not Jane, she's Erica or Katherine or worse yet- Bob.

It is at this moment that you realize there is one person out there who, more than anyone else- knows and appreciates you, for you. She knows you aren't perfect. She knows that you are in fact a very flawed and sometimes idiotic person. But she also knows she's fallen in love with you. And you realize that you've fallen in love with her. Not because she's a fallback option #1, but because she has always been the only true option. You may have even been somewhat successful in pursuing your pipe dreams in heels, but it doesn't matter. It always comes back to Jane. It's always Jane.

Why do I mention this? Well, the conversation I had with my friend actually occurred a couple months ago. But earlier today we happened to have the chance to talk again, and you know what he said to me?

"I'm in love with Jane."

Am I good or what?
