| | Don't worry if you haven't heard of this one, it hasn't been much in circulation the past 49 years. The film is a fairly typical period piece with the usual castles, horses and maidens...until it ends with a 15+ minute swordfight! Again, this list is about quality, so emphasizing the quantity here should tell you how well done this scene was. There is also a wonderful plot that underlies the scene, adding to the tension (I won't spoil it), much like finding out that Vader is Luke's father. Visually, the choreography of the scene is so wonderful because it takes place on so many levels and surfaces. And, naturally, the two adversaries, Mel Ferrer and Stewart Granger, and masterful and well-prepared. If you set out to see one movie that features swordplay, you won't want to miss this one.

Throughout the decades, there has been some great fare, like Rob Roy, various Three Mustketeers films, Prince Valiant, Conan The Destroyer...the list goes on and on. There could probably be a list of just Akira Kurosawa scenes, or Errol Flynn scenes. It was tough paring it down to a mere seven, but this is a good sampling from across the periods and styles.
Thanks for all the input, I'm going to ask for it again, for next week's list: Top 7 movie beatings!
